Hack, Make, Teach
29 Aug
It was a great day down at the space – including a visit from a bunch of people from Maker’s local 256. I’m sure we’ll find a lot to collaborate on.
I wanted to reciprocate and stop by their place on the way home, but evening arrived I realized that I’m being beaten by a cold of something, and headed home.
I’ve been painting and building the makerbot for a couple of weeks, and finally powered it up today. After fussing around with various versions of software for a while, I hit a mostly working combination, and printed this:

The Makerbot coin was the first object I printed
I’m having a few minor printing problems, but most of them can be tweaked out I think. The one that worries me is the periodic halting of the print for a second or so, which causes problems, and the occasional hard motion stop during printing – although the extruder keeps going.
But – not bad for the first few hours under power.

Congrats! This looks awesome! Tweaking can take some time, but it looks like you’re on your way. There are a few things that I think you can do to fix up your prints.
1. Are you using Replicator 0006? If so, go back to 0005. There are problems with 6 and blobbing.
2. Are you running other things on your machine? We’ve had stops happen when the computer can’t give the machine it’s full attention.
Again, nice print, awesome!
Bre, thanks for the encouragement.
I was running 005 (more on that in a sec), but it was very likely that the problems were due to scheduling issues. I was printing from a machine that’s running the bleeding edge daily builds of the Ubuntu Karmic release, and I’ve seen pauses in the system that the user can detect, especially when running firefox (which I was to read the makerbot wiki). Today I’ll see what I can learn about that, ,as it’s something that needs to be addressed in the O.S. anyway. I was aware of the 006 issues because I’ve been following the mailing list.
The path I took for software was:
Finding 007 and deciding to try the bleeding edge
Seeing that 007 wanted me to have later firmware
Trying unsuccessfully to build the firmware
Trying to run 007 with old firmware anyway
Having it print great up to a point and then freeze
Backing up to 005.
